The Hamburg America Line (German: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft [Hapag] = Hamburg American Steam Packet Company) was established in 1847. Packet meant that they were contracted by national governments to regularly transport packets of sea mail.

The home port of the Hamburg America Line was the Port of Hamburg in Hamburg city and state in northern Germany.

In 1970 the Hamburg America Line merged with rival North German Lloyd to become Hapag–Lloyd AG (AG = Aktiengesellschaft ‘corporation’).
