In the early 19th century, Upper Franconia was Upper Main [river name] district (Obermainkreis, 1817–1837). Its capital was Bayreuth then as well.

Upper Main district and the other districts of the Kingdom of Bavaria were divided into regional judicial districts (Landgerichte), as shown in the following table:
